Accidentally Aligned: Trading Reality for Monopoly Money

Updated: Oct 26

We live in a world where so many seek to be validated by others. We measure the importance of what we say & do by the amount of people who like, or dislike our content. When people do not respond in the way that we like, we quickly re-create it, so that we remain relevant, and in-the-moment.

Each of us has a voice that we have been given to interact with the world. Each of has something important to say and do. One of the breakdowns that can occur for each of us is when we begin to believe that the reality of digital interactions on a platform are a form of reality.

We each have an area of influence in our lives. Some are willing to be influenced by people that they do not know, and will probably never meet. Some are willing to be influenced in their decisions by people who care nothing for them at all.

Where we stumble, is that there are people who deeply care for each of us, in the real world that we live in. These are our friends and family, our co-workers, members of our religious communities, and other people that we interact with.

We must be careful in our interactions online that we do not damage our relationships with the reality that is before us.

Social Media presence in many ways, is like Monopoly money. If we have one million followers, we have one million Monopoly dollars. The value of this money is only good for the game that it is played in.

When we have actual currency, we can cross lines, whether or not we are playing a digital game. This currency is far more useful and beneficial. Times will change, and learning to be effective and to influence in the reality that we live in is far more beneficial than being able to do this in one singular space.

Some things to think about today. Are we investing in Monopoly money, so we can become Monopoly millionaires, or are we investing in real relationships, with real people, being an active part of our communities and solving problems for real people, in real places?

Let's make tomorrow better than today.
