We Think As Deep As Our Expectations

The duration of our expectations shapes the depth of our thinking.
When our horizon is short, we default to short-term decisions. But when we align today’s choices with a long-term goal, we naturally begin to think, act, and lead differently.
Consider an underperforming employee. If termination is an easy option, relief feels like the smartest move. Yet if you know you’re committed to working together indefinitely, your approach shifts. You invest. You coach. You build. The same dynamic plays out with a difficult supplier: when switching is simple, we shop the market. When the relationship is for the long haul, we train them, engage deeply, and create something stronger together.
Even a two-year leadership assignment can quietly encourage damaging short-term moves—because we know we can walk away if things don’t work out.
Commitment is a powerful force. When we can see a clear goal, understand its purpose, and decide to walk toward it together, remarkable things become possible.
Not sure where to start? Ask one simple question:
“What is the purpose of the thing we are trying to do?”
That single question has the power to lengthen our horizon and elevate our leadership.
